The Cloth

Hemp is one of the most sustainable fabrics out there. It makes for a very strong fabric (up to three times stronger than cotton!). It wears cool in the summer but warm in the winter. Hemp behaves and looks much like linen – it has a slightly slubby texture giving it a casual yet sophisticated look. It’s soft to the touch and can hold it’s shape well.

Hemp is naturally breathable and highly water absorbent. It is hypo-allergenic, UV resistant, anti-fungal and thermoregulating.

Production & Certification 

Our Hemp is made in Turkey and Oeko-Tex certified. The cloth is made with 77% BCI organic cotton, 23% hemp. The Better Cotton Initiative is a global not-for-profit organisation and the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world.
Hemp is grown and processed in a similar way to linen, yet it can yield twice as much fibre as flax. It has a short growing period of about 100 days and so can be planted and harvested up to four times a year. The cultivation process naturally reduces pests and returns 60-70% of the nutrients it takes into the soil. It requires little water or pesticides and no fertilisers. It is the most carbon negative crop, absorbing more carbon dioxide than it produces.

It can be grown as part of a crop rotation programme as its long roots prevent soil erosion thus preparing the soil for other crops. It is reportedly hypoallergenic and has very high water absorbency so takes dye very well with minimal water waste.

How to sew hemp

• This cloth behaves much like a regular cotton. It is a great fabric choice for beginners as it's easy to work with. 
• We highly recommend pre-washing, as hemp/cotton blends will shrink.

How to pre-wash hemp

Hemp cloth should be pre-washed at 30 degrees with a non-bio detergent on a low spin. 

How to wash hemp

We recommend using the same settings that you used when pre-washing your cloth for your finished garments: 30 degrees with a non-bio detergent on a low spin.

How to dry hemp

Air dry or tumble on a low heat. Do not dry in direct sunlight as the light may bleach the cloth. To iron, use a medium setting with steam.
